PINEVILLE - Dr. Carl H. McGuire, 67, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at his home following a long illness. Born April 27, 1932, in Amigo, he was the son of Ola M. Ellis McGuire of Beckley and the late Carl H. McGuire Sr. [He was a member of the WWHS Class of 1950.] Dr. McGuire attended Virginia Tech and Marshall University and graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry. He was a life member of the Masons, West Virginia Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. He practiced optometry in Wyoming County for 44 years. He was a member of Pineville First United Methodist Church. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pamela; and a daughter, Kathleen. Survivors include his loving wife of 35 years, Loveda McGuire; three daughters, Lynda Alexander and her husband, Dennis, of Cape Coral, Fla., Teresa Sparks and her husband, Steve, of Kings Mountain, N. C., and Donna Stiltner and her husband, Jerry, of Raleigh, N. C.; a son, Michael Houston McGuire of Charleston; two sisters, Carol Tanner and her husband, John, of Midway and Ramona Ison and her husband, Dell, of Reston, Va.; eight grandchildren, Roni Kaye Redd, John Houston Hudkins, Leigh Anne Alexander, Robert Casey Alexander, Jessica Dawn Stiltner, Pamela Reneé Stiltner, Daniel Ryan Stiltner and Lela Michelle Sindle; two great-grandchildren; 13 nieces and nephews; and his loyal employees, Marlene Daniels, Laura Ellis and Doris Brown. Gregory E. Deck, 37, of Beckley, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at Raleigh General Hospital from injuries sustained at work. Born June 27, 1962, in Beckley, he was the son of Pete Deck of Daniels, and Doris Pennington Totten and stepfather Paul Totten of Beckley. Mr. Deck was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and was a 14-year veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a sergeant in Special Forces. He was employed by Eastern Asphalt Co. in Beckley, was a firefighter with the Mabscott Volunteer Fire Department, and was of the Methodist faith. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vicki Jean Deck; maternal grandmother Mattie Pennington; and paternal grandparents Ruth Deck Perdue and Clyde Deck. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn McMurray Deck; his unborn son, Gregory Deck Jr.; four daughters, Samantha Harvey and Bethany Deck, both of Beckley, Holly Deck of Holton, Kan., and Savannah Deck of Manheim, Pa.; eight stepchildren, Wanda Shrewsberry of Beaver, and Christopher, Jonathan, Kelly, Devin, Samantha, Dean and Adam Shrewsberry; a sister, Jennifer Deck of Macungie, Pa.; a stepsister, Vici Bolt of MacArthur; maternal grandfather, Willard Pennington of Beckley; and a stepgrandson, Thomas Shrewsbury of Beaver. Frances Sara Spradlin Bolen, 80, of Beckley, died Friday, March 24, 2000, in SunBright Pine Lodge Nursing Home. Born Feb. 16, 1920, in Oak Hill, she was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Mozella Mason Spradlin. Ms. Bolen was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She was a nurse for many years at Beckley Hospital until her retirement. She also volunteered at Raleigh General Hospital. She was a member of North Beckley Church of Christ and was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde J. Bolen, in 1973; two brothers, Charles and Howard Spradlin; and a sister, Jocelyn Craddock. Survivors include three nieces, Teri Spradlin-Dahn of Pasadena, Md., Retha M. Price of Beckley and Donna J. DANIELS - A. David Abrams, 79, of Daniels died July 13, 1999, in a Charleston hospital after a short illness. He was a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, the University of Maryland Undergraduate College and the University of Maryland's Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. He was a Navy lieutenant during World War II, and a principal in the operation of Modern Furniture Co. He was a former member of the State House of Delegates and a member of Junior Chamber of Commerce, the Civitan Club, Moose Lodge, Blake Knight Country Club and Glady Springs Country Club. He was a retired miner, an organizer and member of UMW and COMPAC, and a former deacon, Sunday school teacher and superintendent of First Baptist Church, Itmann. He was pastor and interim pastor at several churches, including those in Rhodell, Stotesbury and the Winding Gulf district. He was moderator of Winding Gulf Association and a member of ministers and deacons associations, Beckley Lodge 27, Mullens High School Hall of Fame Committee, Mullens Improvement Council, the NAACP, and the Ministerial Alliance, Mullens. OAK HILL - Rodney D. Robinson, 35, of Oak Hill, formerly of Skelton, died July 2, 1999, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to State Police. He was a senior trooper for the Oak Hill detachment of the West Virginia State Police with seven years' service. BECKLEY - Mona Eloise Wood, 88, of Beckley died July 30, 1999, in Heartland of Beckley Nursing Home after a long illness. She was a schoolteacher in Raleigh County with 42 years' service. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and received degrees from Morris Harvey College, Concord College and West Virginia University. She was retired from the West Virginia Board of Education in 1975 and awarded the In-State Distinction Honor. She was co-organizer and president of the Raleigh County Education Association, and president of Raleigh County Classroom Teachers Association. She was co-author of the books "Guide for Beginning Teachers" and "Handbook for Reading Teachers in Raleigh County." She was a 51-year member of Delta Kappa Gamma, served as Alpha Phi state president, and was appointed to the Leadership Development Committee in 1978. She was a 59-year member of United Methodist Church, where she served as teacher, youth department sponsor, and was a member of the adminstrative board and the board of missions. She was a former member of the Beckley Woman's Club Civic Department and the Shepherd's Center Program. ASHVILLE, Ohio - Reba June Smith Gillespie, 74, formerly of Crab Orchard, died suddenly Thursday, March 16, 2000, at her home. Born July 2, 1925, in Affinity, she was the daughter of the late Foster and Bertie Richmond Smith of Sophia. Mrs. Gillespie was a 1942 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, and she retired from the Raleigh County Assessor's Tax Department in 1984. She was a regular volunteer for the Pickaway County Senior Center Association, including the weekly Alzheimer's program. She was a loving, dedicated mother, an active volunteer, a gracious friend and lived her life as a devoted Christian. While living in Ashville, she was a regular attendee of Scioto Chapel UMC, and while living in Crab Orchard she was a regular attendee of Sophia First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Gathern "Cotton" Gillespie, in 1990. Survivors include three children, Gathern F. Gillespie of Jacksonville, Fla., Gayla D. Callahan of Clifton Forge, Va., Getitia J. Matheny, of Circleville, Ohio; a sister, Joyce Parker of Midway; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the WVU College of Dentistry and was elected a member of Psi Omega dental fraternity. He was an Army veteran and served as dental officer in Alabama. He was a member of the board of directors of the Raleigh County YMCA, past president of the Raleigh County Dental Society and a community member of the Beckley Junior High School Improvement Committee. bombardier training pilot and a teacher for 45 years, died Feb. 7,
1999, at her Beckley home after a long illness. She was a graduate
of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, and attended Beckley College.
She held a private pilot license, served as a Women's Air Force
Service Pilot captain during World War II, flew bombardier training
missions and was a private pilot instructor. She attended Marshall
University and the University of Kentucky and was a retired
schoolteacher with 45 years' service. She was a member of the DAR,
Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, American Legion Post 32, Beckley, the
National Education Association, and United Methodist Temple, Beckley.

Paul Martin Chikos Sr., 88, of Logan died June 8, 1999, in Memorial Division, CAMC. He was a retired federal mine inspector, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, and a Third Army Combat Division veteran of World War II. He was a former deacon of the First Baptist churches in Beckley and Logan, and a member of First Presbyterian Church, Logan. Surviving: son, Paul Martin Chikos of Seattle; daughters, Julia Chikos Harris of Wilton, Conn., Joan Chikos Auchter of Centreville, Va.; sister, Ann Chikos Sabo of Detroit; brother, Julius Chikos of Detroit; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. Service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Honaker Funeral Home, Logan, with the Rev. Oren J. Foust officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Pecks Mill, with military rites. Snowplow kills Raleigh pedestrian
PROSPERITY - A Raleigh County man was killed Wednesday morning when
he was struck by a snowplow. Christopher Wayne Grogg, 28, of
Prosperity was walking to work about 4 a.m. when he was struck by a
state Turnpike Commission snowplow, said State Police Lt. Ray
Arbaugh. Arbaugh did not release the name of the driver. Grogg was
an employee of Bob Evans restaurant. He was a member of Grace Baptist
Church, Stanaford, an Army veteran and a graduate of Woodrow Wilson
High School, Beckley. Surviving: stepfather and mother, Bill and
Sharon Grogg Daniel of Prosperity. Service will be 1 p.m. Friday at
Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Prosperity, with the Rev. Bobby Legg
officiating. Burial will be in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens,

Jocie G. Kincaid, 79, of Beckley died Feb. 1, 1999, in Pine Lodge Nursing Home after a long illness. She was a retired registered nurse with 41 years' service, having worked with Cabell County Health Department and Huntington area hospitals. She was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and the Hinton Hospital School of Nursing. Surviving: sister, Ocie Bennett of Glen Morgan, Thelma Wilburn of Kilsyth; several nieces and nephews. Sam Worley, 85, of Beckley died Jan. 29, 1999, in a Beckley hospital after a short illness. He was retired owner and president of Lowe Brothers Electric Co., Beckley, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and had attended Beckley and Concord colleges. He was a high-speed radio operator with the Army during World War II, serving as personal operator for Gen. Matthew Ridgeway, participated in major campaigns including the Battle of the Bulge and was recipient of citations including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. He was a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, Kiwanis, Beckley, and United Methodist Temple, where he served as lay leader and a delegate to the Annual Conference. Surviving: wife, Elieen Bragg Worley; sister, Jessie Worley of Beckley; niece, Rebecca Jonas of Covington, Va.; two grandnephews and one great-grandniece. Service will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Temple, Beckley, with the Rev. Dan Johnson officiating. Burial will be Friday in Arlington National Cemetery. Greenbrier man killed in wreck
A Greenbrier County man was killed Friday evening when his motorcycle
collided with a van on W. Va. 20 and Lick Creek Road in Green Sulphur
Springs. Lee Roy Venable Jr., 41, of Meadow Bridge died from
injuries suffered when his 1997 Harley-Davidson collided with a 1997
Chevrolet van operated by Thomas Smith, 18, of Meadow Bridge at 5:15
p.m. State Police said the accident remains under investigation.
Venable was an electrical engineer for American Electric Power Co., a
graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, and received an
engineering degree from West Virginia Tech. He was a member of Rupert
Rotary Club and Summersville Moose Lodge. Surviving: wife, Monica
Smathers Venable; stepdaughters, Lorri Patterson of Morgantown, Abby
Patterson of Los Angeles, Ellie Patterson of Meadow Bridge; parents,
Lee and Peggy Williams Venable of Hague, Va.; brothers, Ed of
Richmond, Va., Jim of King George, Va. Memorial service will be 11
a.m. Monday at Smathers Funeral Home, Rainelle, with the Rev. Robert
Anderson officiating. The body has been cremated. The remains will be
buried in Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville. Friends may call

STANAFORD - Gerald E. "Jerry" Foley, 36, of Stanaford died
March 14, 1998, of injuries received in a dirt bike accident,
according to State Police. He was a service employee at PRT
Enterprises, attended Woodrow Wilson High School, and was a lifelong
resident of Stanaford. Surviving: mother, Aileen Murray Foley of
Stanaford; brothers, Darrell and Robert, both of Stanaford; sister,
Brenda Foley of Shady Spring; one niece; two nephews. Graveside
service will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mount View Cemetery, Mount View,

Sherman Covey Trail, 87, of Beckley died Jan. 20, 1999. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, and attended Berea and Concord colleges, receiving a bachelor's degree in education. He received a master's degree in educational administration from West Virginia University and did post-graduate work at the University of Kentucky and George Peabody University. He was retired from the Raleigh County Board of Education, having served as a teacher, principal, superintendent and assistant superintendent. He was a member of the Beckley Kiwanis Club, the Raleigh County and West Virginia retired teachers associations , Phi Delta Kappa Theta Xi and the Beckley Elks Lodge. Surviving: wife, Maxine; son, Dr. Julian Trail of Norwood, N.C.; daughters, Patricia Peters and Sharon Casto, both of Beckley; sister, Anise Trail Collins of Lester; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
