The world is an emptier place and one of sadness with the unexpected passing Wednesday, May 12, 2004, of Peggy Jean Moore, 56, of Crab Orchard, after a sudden heart attack. A highly motivated but unassuming lady of not only physical beauty but inner goodness as well, Peggy quickly became a friend to all she met. She was born Feb. 25, 1948, at Mabscott, the daughter of the late Bertha McGowan, who preceded her in death in January 2002, and Guy McGowan, who died when Peggy was very young. A middle child, she was also preceded in death by two older brothers, Lee and Johnny McGowan. Throughout her life, Peggy maintained a high degree of personal morality, always marveled at the skills and achievement of those she knew, was tender in her perception and portrayal of feelings for others and amazingly graceful in her ability to equally deal with happy occasions and those that brought her pain. An extraordinarily gifted individual, she was a talented businesswoman, having jointly owned and operated an accounting and tax preparation business (Dean and Moore Tax Service) for a number of years. Skilled at carpentry, she worked side-by-side with her husband, Wayne, in building their home at Crab Orchard, as well as in other construction endeavors. She had an abiding love of nature and the outdoors, caring for her lawn and beautiful plants and flowers. An expert seamstress, she designed clothing and costumes on many occasions for her children. Her home was graced with beautiful draperies, quilts, crocheted items and other household crafts which she created for the décor she desired. A person of great inner strength, motivation, independence and a will to succeed in all she attempted, Peggy had a fierce zest for life and made those around her enjoy the simple times they shared. She had a contagious smile and a calming laugh. A natural born teacher with a high level of proficiency in mathematics, she taught in her early married years classes at Stoco Junior High, and, throughout her life, tutored young children just entering their teens. She was an excellent role model, and was astute at destroying negative thinking. She loved sports and strongly supported the Little League, high school and college softball efforts of her daughter, Michelle. Her fierce love of family and friends was a thing of beauty in self. Peggy was a quick defender of the underdog in all situations and was just as quick to see the excellence in others. She was totally unselfish. She had an indisputable capacity of love for her husband, Allen Wayne Moore; their daughter, Michelle Lee Moore Lilly, and their grandson, Jacob "Jake" Wayne Moore Combs. She was eagerly awaiting the birth of their second grandson, J.J., who is due in July. Michelle was one of three children born to Wayne and Peggy; the first, a son, was stillborn in October 1977, and the second daughter, Katie Jo, was claimed in December 1984 at age 2 by a rare form of cancer in children. Not only was Peggy a loving wife, mother and grandmother, she was a devoted child who cared for her mother, Bertha McGowan, a longtime resident of Mabscott, until her mother's death in January 2002. Difficult family economic times in her childhood did not deter Peggy, who was an honor student at Mabscott Elementary, Beckley Junior High and Woodrow Wilson High schools. She earned scholarships to attend Alderson-Broaddus College at Philippi, from which she was graduated in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics. In addition to her husband, daughter and grandchildren, Peggy is survived by a sister, Lora McGowan of Pluto; two brothers-in-law, James Leslie Moore and his wife, Betty, of Daniels and Harry M. Callaway and his wife, Margaret, of Oak Hill; a sister-in-law, Dora Alice O'Neal and her husband, Eugene, of 104 Mollohan Drive, Beckley; and a number of nieces and nephews who loved and respected Peggy as an aunt and a great friend. A celebration of Peggy's life and mourning at her passing will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday at Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley, with friends and family members officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Arrangements by Calfee Funeral Home, Beckley.
