Charles Lewis Jones. The old saying, "Once a Marine, always a Marine," described the life of Charlie Jones. Mr. Jones, who dropped out of high school to fight for his country during World War II, also served in Korea and Vietnam. Charles Lewis Jones, of Hampton, died of cancer on Monday, Feb. 28, 2005, in UPMC Passavant, McCandless. He was 77. "The Marines were Charlie's life," said his wife, Mildred. "In fact, he was ready to go back to Vietnam for another tour of duty when I convinced him that he had served his country well and it was time to retire. By then we had been married and had three children. "Charlie was a talented man. When he wasn't in combat, the Marines gave him a number of assignments, such as working with the engineers on building air strips for Marine fighter planes." Born in Glade Springs, Va., and raised in Beckley, W.Va., Mr. Jones was one of eight children of John Lee and Lula Watson Jones. His father was a miner. In 1944, Mr. Jones dropped out of Beckley High School to join the Marines and participate in the final assault on the Japanese-held islands prior to the war's end. After he retired from the Marines in 1968, the Jones family moved to Pittsburgh, where Mrs. Jones' home town. Mr. Jones went to work as a salesman in the carpet department at Sears when it was located in the Allegheny Center Mall on the North Side, his wife said. He spent 22 years at Sears and retired in 1990. Mrs. Jones said her husband received his GED (general equivalency diploma ) while serving with the Marines. "We home-schooled our grandchildren," she said. "Charlie taught them history and science. "Charlie also became very much involved with the Latin Mass Community at St. Boniface Church on East Street. He faithfully attended Mass and was a greeter for the Sunday services." His family said Mr. Jones was reluctant to talk about his combat experience. "Dad had seen the horrors of combat," said his son, Paul. "And like many men who saw combat, he seldom talked about it. "When he talked about the years he spent in the Marines, he'd describe the good times and the camaraderie with the men he served with." Mr. Jones is survived by his wife, Mildred A. Weber Jones; two daughters, Donna Marie Moore and her husband, David, of West Deer, and Theresa A. Osbourn and her husband, Paul, of Texas; two sons, Mark P.
