Ida Kay Crookshanks, 63, lifelong resident of Beckley, W.Va., beloved wife, mother, and friend, went to be with the Lord Savior on Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, shortly after noon, following a short battle with cancer and complications thereof. She was the owner of Blue Circle Ranch in Bradley, W.Va., which she co-founded in 1960 with her father, Collis Amon, and continues to be in operation. She lived her life on her terms, following her passion of raising horses and helping kids find that “special” horse to call their own. In recent years, Ida founded the Eastern Equine Foundation, which provides the financing necessary to fund lessons for children and adults who have special needs. Ida was also a member of the Bradley Presbyterian Church in which she served as an Elder. Ida was the wife of John H. Crookshanks Jr. of Rainelle, W.Va. Preceding her in death were Ida’s father, Collis Johnson Amon; mother, E. Agnes Amon; brother, C. Don Amon; maternal grandparents, John and Tessie Tanner; and paternal grandparents, Dr. J.M. and Ida Mae Amon. Left behind to carry on are her husband, John; daughter, Amanda; her brother, John Amon and wife Judi of Malden, Mo., and their daughters, Lori Pierce and husband Hank and their two children of Rodgers, Ark., and Lisa Richardson and husband Rick of Centerton, Ark.; her brother, Richard Amon and wife Gaye of Marietta, Ga., and their sons, Rick Amon and wife Deidra and their two children of Atlanta, Ga., and Ron Amon and Michelle and their children of Temple, Ga., and a daughter, Debbie Novak and husband Jim of Cincinnati, Ohio; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Amon of Wilmington, N.C., and her son, Mark Amon and wife Marie of Greensboro, N.C., and daughter, Joy Kay McThatter and husband Kevin of Wilmington, N.C. She will also leave behind a multitude of friends who have supported her throughout her life. The visitation will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008, with a service to follow at 4 p.m. at Blue Ridge Funeral Home. Family and friends may congregate at Blue Circle afterward for support and fellowship. Flowers would be appreciated, but donations in lieu of flowers to the Eastern Equine Foundation or charity of choice would be wonderful in helping those in need. “God forbid that I should go to a heaven in which there are no horses.” Online condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.blueridgefuneralhome.com. Jo Ann Calfee Stanton, 56, of Primrose Lane, Beckley, left this world Tuesday, July 22, 2008, as the result of a second battle with cancer. She died at home, after spending her final days with family, close friends and the Hospice nurses whose care comforted her. Born Dec. 6, 1951, at Beckley, she was the daughter of Vernice Maxine Cole Calfee (now Lilly) and the late Hershal Robert Calfee. Jo Ann was the director of the Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House, operated by Hospice of Southern West Virginia. As such, she oversaw a staff of dedicated nurses who provided comfort to those for whom death was imminent. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the spring of 2007, fought it and was victorious by the end of that year. Sadly, the disease had returned by June of 2008 and spread rapidly throughout her body. Jo Ann devoted her adult life to the care of others, having received her registered nurse certification from Saint Mary’s School of Nursing in Huntington in 1972. She went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Bellarmine College in Kentucky and worked in a variety of health care settings. Among them were a Chicago emergency room, the Beckley VA Medical Center and Raleigh General Hospital, where she eventually worked her way up to vice president-chief nursing executive. Before joining the hospice team, she worked as a health care consultant for Charleston-based McKenna and Associates, which afforded her the opportunity to travel throughout the country and abroad while providing hospitals with advice and education necessary to comply with national standards. Her nursing career led to friendships with some of the same nurses who would care for her when she found herself in the same predicament as those she served during her short career with Hospice of Southern West Virginia. Outside of work, Jo Ann was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and companion who enjoyed spending time with close friends, fishing, reading, camping, trips to the beach, and singing alto in the choir at United Methodist Temple, where she was a member. Other than her father, she was preceded in death by a half-brother, Hershal Robert Calfee Jr. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 33 years, William David Stanton, of Beckley; two daughters, Audrey Jo Stanton Smith and her husband, Jarrod, of Beckley, and Rebecca Ann Mann and her husband, Geoff, of Richmond, Va.; two grandsons, Jon David Schwitzerlette of Beckley, and Jackson Wilde Mann of Richmond, Va.; a third grandchild due to Rebecca in October; her mother, Vernice Maxine Lilly of Hilltop; two sisters, Julia Robinson of Lebanon, Tenn., and Janet R. Warden and her husband, Homer A., of Stanaford; her mother-in-law, Alice Virginia Stanton; brother-in-law James Jeffrey Stanton; nieces Jane Spruill and her husband, Rick, and Sarah Robinson, all of Lebanon, Tenn., and Cassie Stanton of South Carolina; nephews Josh Robinson of Blacksburg, Va., Robert and Alan Warden of Beckley, and Stephen Stanton of South Carolina; two great nephews, Michael Eds and Will Spruill of Tennessee; several close friends she considered as dear as family; and a faithful little dog named Tippy. Services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, at United Methodist Temple, Beckley, with Dr. Chuck Pullins officiating. Friends will serve as pallbearers. Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House, where Jo Ann helped to build a much needed service for those whose end-of-life care needs could not be met at home; or Hospice of Southern West Virginia, parent agency of the Bowers House and the organization that provided health care services to Jo Ann in her final weeks. Leon Operchuck (1924-2008). Leon Operchuck was born June 15, 1924 in Tams, West Virginia and died May 18, 2008, one month before his 84th birthday. As a young man he invented and created many electronic gadgets which included an actual transmitting radio station where kids in the neighborhood would request their favorite music and listen at home. On January 23, 1943 he joined the army and after training was sent to London, England where he became part of a logistics group that assisted with troop and supply movement. Leon met the love of his life in London, E ileen Jesse Edwards. She was a hostess at the local USO club. After several months of dating they were married on August 5, 1944. They were married almost 64 years. After the war ended Leon returned to the states and Eileen followed shortly thereafter. Leon is survived by his wife, Eileen; three sons, Dan, Terry and Leon (Rick); five grandchildren, Kristina and Sabrina, Nica, Brandon and Laura; six great grandchildren, D'an'Drea, Anthony, Mekala, Kobe, Myranda and Christopher; and one great-great grandchild , Jaelyn. Leon had a limited formal education after high school, but was a very wise and intelligent man. He was a quiet man of action. He could make or fix anything with limited resources, he would say, "necessity is the mother of invention". Leon did not start using a computer until his mid-seventies, but was a master at web surfing and email. He was also a shrewd businessperson when it came to garage selling. He knew how to buy low and resale high. Leon loved to play blackjack and would enter into tourna ments whenever possible. A month before his death he was in a tournament with 300 people. After several hours and rounds of play he won the tournament and was the champion. Although he won a trophy and money, he was most proud that he could still out play both young and old. Leon was a wonderful husband and father, he will be deeply missed for his kindness, patience and mentoring. At his request he will be cremated, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. A beautiful, intelligent, generous and fun-loving woman, Sherry touched
many lives with her welcoming, warm personality. No party was ever the
same if she wasn't there.
A successful businesswoman, who helped introduce art to Charleston,
Sherry founded The Art Store, which she owned for 35 years until her

fall biennial art sales. In 2005, Sherry was honored at the Clay
Center's Appalachian Corridors Juried Exhibition, and she has received
and continues to receive honors for her contribution to the art
community.
Though she had much to be proud of in her career, Sherry's true pride
and joy were her three boys and her six grandchildren. Sherry was a
dedicated mother and grandmother and she will be deeply missed by her
family. We will never forget Sherry's cooking, storytelling and love of
entertaining.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Robert, Hallie and Evalene Maples; and her son, Ralph Robert Beckett. She is survived by her loving husband, Ralph L. Beckett; daughter, Rebecca Beckett Clay; and her grandchildren, Sydney and Tyler Clay. She is also survived by her brother, James W. Maples, as well as numerous cousins throughout the U.S. and China and many friends throughout the years. Her family roots were from Indiana, Tennessee and West Virginia. She spent her early childhood up and down the Ohio River on the steamboats her father navigated for the Corps of Engineers. Early elementary school years were in Cincinnati and when her mother died, she (age 10) and her brother (age 8) came to live with relatives in Beckley. She graduated from WWHS 1952 and attended nursing school at Christ Hospital in Cincinnati. In September 1954 she married her high school sweetheart, Ralph Beckett, and moved to Durham, N.C., where he was attending Duke University. Their first child, Rebecca, was born in 1957 as she was graduating from Marshall University with a B.A. in art education and biology. She later received an M.A. in painting. The family moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where her second child, Ralph, was born. San Diego was the next stop on her journey where she taught in the public schools and attended San Diego State University. The move back to Beckley came in 1965 where they made the Maples family homeplace that her grandparents built in 1915 their new home. Joan began her 27-year career teaching art appreciation and biology at Beckley College (now Mountain State University). Ten thousand students passed through her classes, where she was passionate about conveying knowledge, observation and appreciation for art and architecture and the beauty of things right in front of our eyes every day. She enjoyed painting, and many of her works hang in businesses and homes. Her lifelong joy was her flowers. She devoted all her energy and focus to planning, purchasing and with the help of her gardening buddy, Kevin, planting her beloved plants. Her garden became her canvas in the latter years and she still was applying color to the landscape the day before she died. She belonged to the National Art Education Association, Beckley Woman’s Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society and at one time the Beckley Art Group. She also was a member of Beckley Presbyterian Church. Joan required hemodialysis three times a week for 17 years due to a rare genetic abnormality of her kidneys. The Raleigh Dialysis Center, doctors and staff there were her extended family and friends. Joan’s gift was to always see the beauty that could be created with paint, flowers, textiles and just everyday items. She was a great listener and an inspiration to all who knew her.
