Stanaford Marine drowns during rainstorm in Japan. Japan's heaviest rain on record has killed a 21-year-old U.S. Marine from Raleigh County. The torrential rains in central Japan - bolstered by a typhoon creeping up from the south - killed seven people Tuesday, including Lance Cpl. Charlie Callaway Meador of Stanaford. Callaway was swept away by high waves and drowned at a military base on southern Okinawa island, local police said Wednesday. Okinawa is about 1,000 miles southwest of Tokyo. He was watching the typhoon-fed waves with friends on the coast at Camp Schwab when he was carried away Tuesday evening, a police spokesman said. The rains also flooded streets, kept thousands of people away from their homes, stranded 50,000 bullet train passengers and forced Toyota and Mitsubishi to halt production. In central Japan, rainfall totaling 23 inches was recorded in Tokai, near Nagoya, the local observatory said. The downpour was the heaviest ever recorded in Japan, the Meteorological Agency said. Meador was stationed at the 4th Marine Division headquarters company in Okinawa. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1998 and was a Beckley Eagle Scout. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Rose & Quesenberry Funeral Home in Beckley.
