HUNTINGTON -- Marshall athletic director Bob Marcum moved quickly and filled a department vacancy with a familiar face.
David Reed, who previously served as MU’s assistant compliance director, was hired Wednesday as associate athletic director for game operations and facilities. Reed replaces Mike Bianchin, who held the position for the last four years. Bianchin left Marshall for a position with Eli Lilly and Company.
"We are excited that David has decided to return to our athletic department," Marcum said.
A Beckley native, Reed is a graduate of Mountain State University (’98) with a degree in Environmental Studies. He has a master’s from Marshall (’99) in Athletic Administration.
Reed has served as Compliance Coordinator at the University of Pittsburgh the past two years. While at Pitt he was responsible for interpreting NCAA rules for athletic department staff.
Prior to his time at Pittsburgh, Reed served as assistant compliance director at Marshall where he assisted with the day-to-day operations of the compliance program.
"Marshall has always been a very special place to me," Reed said. "Even when I left there I always hoped my career would lead me back home, and I am excited now that it has.
Reed enters his new position at a busy time. Student-athletes begin reporting to camp next week for fall sports, and several refurbishing projects are planned for the Cam Henderson Center basketball arena.
"We want to refinish the (basketball) floor," Marcum said. "And we’re moving ahead with our new scoreboards. ISP (the marketing rights holder for Marshall athletics) is really on board with that project."
Another major facilities project looming involves the Marshall Stadium playing surface. The current Astroturf likely will be replaced with a version of field turf, but that will take place "in the next two years or three," according to Marcum.
